Hello My Foodie Followers….Tonight, our first review, we dined at the Red Owl Tavern in the Hotel Monaco, located in the tourist district of Philadelphia, PA (www.redowltavern.com). We arrived, on time, and were seated in the upper tier over looking the bar. Great views (grins). Our server, Ryan, arrived and took our drink order and gave us the special for the evening. I had the usual and Al enjoyed a Great Lakes Beer. Al started his meal with a soup of the day (a crab/corn chowder with tortilla strips and a shrimp). Our waiter said it was spicy and had a Manhattan flavor. I tasted the soup upon its arrival and thought it was very spicy. Al said it had kick but wasn’t over the top for him. For his entree, he had the special, scallops over a beet carpacio. The scallops were not fresh and had a taste of ammonia. I had the waiter taken them away. Al ordered a pear salad with a humboldt cheese in its place. I had the filet with blue cheese butter, medium rare, served with a carmelized cauliflower and a couple crispy onion rings. I gave Al a couple rings. The steak was cooked to perfection. The cauliflower was ok. We shared a side of grilled asparagus with a shaved parmesan cheese and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar glaze. Our server brought over a free drink, a complimentary salad and another order of the grilled asparagus. Al had another beer. And for dessert, Al had a whoopie pie with a peanut butter filling and a glass of 10 year old tawny port. I enjoyed a tangerine sorbet. Although the special was less than special, our server took very good care of us. We will return another time. I award Red Owl Tavern 3.5 out of 5 Diva Crowns. Bon Appetit!
